MOHUN BAGAN—A PRESTIGIOUS ORGANIZATION, NOT
MERELY A CLUB

It’s a name that dominates right through its inception — 1889 evoking passion among millions of onlookers, creating history in the annals of Indian football scenario with enviable success and thumping glory. It has given birth to numerous stalwarts in the football fraternity who has made the green and maroon flag fluttering high atop among all others. Truly speaking, to write in words it’s a foolhardy — but to many it is a living soul embarking in the ocean of soccer arena — where from it achieved the National pride.

The success of 1911 IFA Shield win was immensely remarkable in the context of creating independent India. Football here worked as a source of irresistible resolution in the minds of the freedom fighters to fight tooth and nail against all odds of the Englishmen. All countrymen were proud of Mohun Bagan as those bare-footed eleven players has shown the way towards the bigger movement — they started to believe that once they have defeated the English men in the field, they will also be able to oust them from the country. Thus the 1911 IFA Shield win of Mohun Bagan boosted the freedom movement. With great indebtness, a report was published in The Empire— “All honour to Mohun Bagan!! Those eleven players are not only glory to themselves and to their Club and to the great nation to which they belong; they are the glory to the game itself”. From that time onwards it never looked back, with great resources in armoury it has pitted against all odds.

Mohun Bagan was the first ever Indian Team to get participation in the Rovers Cup and Durand Cup — the two most prestigious tournament of that time. In those days British army teams had the sole right to participate in those particular tournaments. It was indeed a historic event that bestowed upon Mohun Bagan.

Mohun Bagan is the only football club of India to have the sole credit of winning almost all the tournaments and in the year 1989, the Centenary Year of the Club Government of India issued a postage stamp to pay tribute to the eleven brave sons of Bengal who won the IFA Shield in 1911 and the then Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi honoured the Club with the title National Club of India.

Club’s glory not only remains nationally, but in the International arena the Club has got official honours too. A new feather of glory was added to the cap of the Club when AFC recognized the club as the Diadora Team of Asia in the year 1998. FIFA has formed an Elite Task Force along with eleven clubs around the world for the upliftment of football throughout the world and Mohun Bagan is the only club from India to represent in that elite panel.

Mohun Bagan club has already attached its name with the four world famous footballers— in the year 1977, Mohun Bagan got the opportunity to play against Pele, the King of Football, who came here with Cosmos Club, in 1990 Roger Milla came with Diamond Club to play against Mohun Bagan, German legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn along with Bayern Munich team came to Kolkata in 2008 on an official invitation from Bengal Peerless Group on the occasion of Kahn’s farewell from International Soccer arena and here also Mohun Bagan being the National Club of India got the privilege to play an exhibition match against Bayern Munich team, it is indeed a rare achievement for any Indian Club. Last but not the least, in the same year (2008) another unprecedented glory was capped by the Club when the Prince of Football, Diego Armando Maradona paid a visit to the Club as a part of his Kolkata tour.

The club has also shown proper care for nurturing the young talents and as a goal of “Vision 2014” Mohun Bagan club as the first football club of India has established a residential football academy at Durgapur in association with Steel Authority of India Ltd. Promising youths are being nurtured and many of them have donned the club jersey as well as have served the country.

The world famous football clubs are now trying to be professional and thus attempting to attract their fan followings by merchandising the club products. Mohun Bagan club is also trying to be a part of this trend and as the first football club of India has already opened a souvenir shop. Mohun Bagan is the only football club in India to officially launch a mascot named “Baggu”.

The unfathomable glory of the Club is hard to counter upon. Presumably it’s the cultural tradition along with rich heritage that eclipsed it as an Institution — not merely a Club.
