GOLDEN ERA OF THE CLUB AND CENTENARY YEAR CELEBRATION : 1978–1999

1978 was again a golden year for the club as the club grabbed First Division Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield consecutively for three times again after the year 1960–1962, Federation Cup for the first time jointly with East Bengal and Sait Nagji Trophy of Calicut. Club reached the final of Durand Cup but lost to East Bengal.

In the next year, club maintained the golden run by winning First Division Calcutta League, IFA Shield defeating East Bengal by 1-0 and Durand Cup defeating Punjab Police by 1-0 and Darjeeling Gorkha Brigade Gold Cup.

In 1980, club won Federation Cup for the second time (joint winner) and Durand Cup defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 1-0. Kolkata Football League was abandoned due to the tragic incident on 16th August derby match at Eden Gardens, where 16 football lovers died at the incident. To pay honour to these football lovers, later this day has been declared as the “Football Lover’s day” and has been celebrated through a blood donation camp. This year Umapati Kumar (1980–1990) was elected as the President of the club.

In 1981, club again showed excellent performance by winning Federation Cup consecutively for three times defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-0, IFA Shield (jointly), Rovers Cup defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-0 and Sait Nagji Trophy.

In 1982, Mohun Bagan won IFA Shield defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-1, Durand Cup (jointly), Federation Cup defeating Mafatlal Mills by 1-0 and Darjeeling Gorkha Brigade Gold Cup.

In 1983, Mohun Bagan became the champion in First Division Calcutta League but lost to Mohammedan Sporting Club and JCT Mills in the final of Federation Cup and Durand Cup respectively.

In 1984, club won the First Division Calcutta League, Bordoloi Trophy, Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup and Durand Cup defeating East Bengal by 1-0. To pay tribute to the “Chinese Wall” Gostho Paul a statue was established in today’s Gostho Paul sarani. This year Chuni Goswami also got the Padmashree Award.

Next year club won Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup, Durand Cup defeating JCT and Rovers Cup defeating Salgaocar SC by 2-0 but lost to East Bengal in the Federation Cup final.

In 1986, Mohun Bagan won First Division Calcutta League, Durand Cup defeating East Bengal by 1-0, Federation Cup defeating East Bengal and Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup but lost to Dempo SC in Rovers Cup Final.

In 1987, Club won IFA Shield beating Punjab Police by 1-0 and Federation Cup defeating Salgaocar SC by 2-0 but lost to Mohammedan Sporting Club and JCT Mills in the final of Rovers Cup and Durand cup respectively.

In 1988, Mohun Bagan could not manage to maintain the same rhythm as in the previous years and won only the Rovers Cup defeating East Bengal by 1-0.

In 1989, Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield defeating TFA by 1-0, Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup and All Airlines Gold Cup. Mohun Bagan also reached the final of Durand cup but lost to East Bengal in tiebreaker. This year was the club’s Centenary Year and to pay honour to 1911 victory of the team Government of India issued a postage stamp and the then Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi honoured Mohun Bagan with the title as the “National Club of India”. A torch rally was organised on this occasion. People from all works of life, irrespective of class and creed from youth to the old age spontaneously joined in the historic torch rally depicting the glorious centenary celebration. The atmosphere totally resembled a festive spirit as beugles, flowers and conch-shells reverberated the surroundings thus mesmerizing the huge gathering. Every streets, lanes and by-lanes were decorated with green and maroon festunes, placards with replica of boat atop. Many ex-footballers along with that time’s current squad were present on this auspicious occasion. In the solemn presence of club President Shri Umapati Kumar and Secretary Shri Sailen Manna, Gouri Nath Shastri ignited the silver bodied torch. Before the rally started slight drizzle could not dampen the spirit of thousands of fans. In the words of President Umapati Kumar it was a great honour to be a part of the member of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club. “Today I respect those who have made Mohun Bagan in the lime light.” From Basu Bati the rally reached Mohun Bagan Lane. Thereafter it passed through Kirti Mitra Lane, Mohun Bagan Row, Shibdas Bhaduri Street in reaching Shyambazar Five Point crossing. The place wore a festive look with sea of people cramping for space to have a curious look at the rally. Traffic was left stranded for several hours due to this huge gathering. Thereafter the rally crossed Bhupen Bose Avenue in reaching Shyam Square. In the backdrop Sens’ house bears the sweet memories of the club. The boundary wall of Sens’ house bears the testimony of the portraits of legends like Danti Sen, Bhau Sen, Kesto Sen and likes. When the procession reached Sova Bajar Rajbari, elderly people decked up in authentic Bengali dress conglomerated in line to give a new dimension to the programme. Finally the rally reached the Club Tent. There the torch was handed by Chuni Goswami and subsequently it was given to Subrata Bhattacharjee. Dhiren Dey, the Club Secretary was present to hand over the torch to Prasnta Banerjee who rounded up the ground with the torch. President Shri Umapati Kumar inaugurated the foundation of the torch stand in the midst of the programme. Club officials rejoiced the occasion and they were basking in the glorious chapters of this mammoth achievement.

In 1990, Mohun Bagan only got the championship honour for the First Division Calcutta League. This year club first ever included any foreign player in the squad in its 100 years history. Cheema Okeri, the “Black Panther” played in green and maroon jersey in the Calcutta Football League for Bagan. This year club lost the person, Dhiren Dey who protected the club from any type of off ward situation since half of the century. This year Mohun Bagan players again got the opportunity to play against the famous World cupper of Cameroon Roger Milla when he came with his club (Diamond Club) to participate in a friendly match as a part of club’s centenary celebration. Mohun Bagan lost the match by 1-3 and Milla scored a goal in this match. Subrata Bhattacharya and Prashanta Banerjee performed well.

In 1991 Mohun Bagan won Rovers Cup defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 1-0. Club also grabbed Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup and All Airlines Gold Cup.

1992 was a good year for Mohun Bagan as the club managed to lift some national level tournaments like Federation Cup defeating East Bengal by 2-0, Rovers Cup defeating JCT Mills by 2-0 along with First Division Calcutta League and Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup.

In 1993, Mohun Bagan lifted the Federation Cup defeating Mahindra and Mahindra by a solitary goal and also grabbed the All Airlines Gold for the third time.

In 1994, Club won Federation Cup consecutively for three times after 1980–1982 defeating Salgaocar SC. It’s a record in itself when any Indian Football club managed to won the Federation Cup consecutively for three years for two times. Club also won Calcutta Football League, Durand Cup defeating East Bengal by 1-0 and Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup in this year.

In 1995 Club did not managed to grab any national level tournament, only won the PNB Centenary Trophy and took the second position in First Division Calcutta League.

In 1996, Mohun Bagan won the McDowell’s Cup and Bordoloi Trophy and was the runners for this year First Division Calcutta League.

In 1997, Club won DCM Trophy and Calcutta Football League. Club also reached the final of Durand Cup final, but unfortunately lost the game to FC Kochin.

In 1998, Club returned to the road of success. Club grabbed the Federation Cup and IFA Shield defeating East Bengal by 2-1 in both the encounters. Mohun Bagan also won the National Football League first time in this year. A new feather of glory on the cap of Mohun Bagan was added when AFC recognized the club as the Diadora Team of Asia in January of this year.

In 1999, Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield defeating Tollygunge Agragami by 1-0 and Sanghati Cup at Kolkata.
